The Importance of Conflict-Free Diamonds

The Importance of Conflict-Free Diamonds

Conflict-free diamonds are those that have been obtained without association with human rights abuses, child labor, violence or environmental degradation.

Diamonds that are sold in order to fund armed conflict and civil war are generally referred to as “conflict diamonds.” The profits of these diamonds have been used by rebels and warlords to buy arms and have led to many wars and millions of deaths.

As this information became more widely-known in recent years, customers, jewelers and governments around the world started to pay more attention to where diamonds came from, who was selling the diamonds, and the processes associated with the diamonds. This led to an increase in conflict-free diamonds.

Conflict-free diamonds are diamonds that have not been sold by governments or entities that trade in diamonds to fund their conflicts.

Conflict-free diamonds are individually tracked through their full chain of custody to ensure that the mining, cutting and polishing processes are completed ethically.

About the Kimberly Process

In the early 2000s, governments, non-governmental organizations, and members of the diamond industry met to establish a process that would control the import and export of rough diamonds and eliminate the trade of “conflict diamonds.” These meetings resulted in the creation of the “Kimberly Process,” which was named for Kimberly, South Africa, where the meetings took place.

Participating nations started to implement the rules stated in the Kimberly Process in 2003.

The process imposes strict requirements on shipments of rough diamonds in order to ensure they come from responsible sources.

Today, 99% of diamonds in the marketplace are conflict-free.

When you’re looking for diamonds, be sure to ask the jeweler for information on the diamonds they are selling and specifically about conflict-free diamonds. A reputable jeweler should have no issue explaining the details of conflict-free diamonds to you and should be able to provide you with information on the ethical status of the diamonds they offer as well as the labor and environmental controls in the countries of origin.

It is also important that the jeweler you are shopping from recognizes the potential for ethical issues in the diamond industry and that he or she understands that this is a concern. If you are speaking with a jeweler and he or she dismisses your feelings about ethical diamonds, this may be a red flag. A responsible jeweler will acknowledge that there are potential issues with some diamonds and will understand that you are concerned about where the diamonds you are purchasing have come from.

Diamonds are beautiful. They are a timeless way to show someone how much you care about them. They are an international symbol of love. When you purchase a diamond, it is important that you feel confident in your purchase and comfortable with where your diamonds came from and the processes used in the mining and production of the diamonds. At Damasci, we understand this and will always give you as much information as possible on the diamonds we sell. We are also completely dedicated to continuously reviewing and improving our policies on ethical mining processes.
