Your engagement ring checklist
Choosing an engagement ring means balancing the wearer's style, daily routine and your budget. Start with the complete ring, including the centre diamond, setting and any custom details, rather than choosing a diamond in isolation.
How to pick an engagement ring
- Set a comfortable budget. Allow for the setting and diamond together, and confirm the final price before ordering.
- Choose a style. Shortlist solitaire, hidden halo, three-stone or other designs based on what the wearer likes.
- Compare diamonds. Decide between laboratory-grown and natural origin, then assess the individual stones, their appearance and reports.
- Choose the metal and fit. Compare available gold colours and platinum, confirm ring size and consider how a wedding band will sit alongside it.
- Confirm the practical details. Ask about production time, delivery, resizing and the policies that apply to your chosen ring.
Start with engagement ring settings, compare lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds, or discuss a design in our Custom Studio. You can shop online or visit our Toronto and Mississauga showrooms.
Selecting the Right Diamond
Choose a diamond shape you enjoy, then compare actual stones in your preferred size and price range. The 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity and carat weight provide a useful starting point, but also look at the diamond itself.
Carat measures weight, so check face-up measurements as well. Compare sparkle, transparency and visible colour or inclusions under different lighting. Ask which laboratory report accompanies each stone and confirm its origin.
Our lab-grown vs natural diamond guide can help you compare origin choices. Shortlist lab-grown or natural diamonds before choosing a compatible setting.
Selecting the Right Metal
Compare available white, yellow and rose gold options with platinum. Choose a tone you enjoy and discuss how the metal suits the setting, your daily routine and any existing jewellery you plan to wear with it.
Ask about the available gold purity, ongoing care and resizing options for your specific ring. White gold may need rhodium replating over time; polishing and maintenance requirements depend on the piece and how it is worn.
View the metal options on our engagement ring settings rather than assuming every design is offered in every metal. Confirm the selected metal on the product page before ordering.
Selecting a Ring Setting for you
Compare solitaire, halo, hidden halo and three-stone settings with your preferred diamond shape. Consider the ring's profile, band width and how it feels on the hand, as well as its appearance in photographs.
Think about everyday wear and how a wedding band will sit beside the engagement ring. Ask whether the designs fit together in the way you prefer before choosing the pair.
Explore engagement ring settings online, or use our Custom Studio to discuss changes to an existing design or a personal idea.
Certification
Ask which laboratory report accompanies the centre diamond you select. Check its origin, measurements and quality information, and verify the report number with the issuing laboratory where that service is available.
GIA issues grading reports, not appraisals or certificates of value. A jewellery appraisal is a separate document used for purposes such as insurance; confirm what documentation you need and what is supplied with your purchase.
Read our diamond grading and GIA report guide for a checklist you can use while comparing stones.
