If you’re shopping for a diamond, there are several factors to keep in mind. Our education center outlines some of the important points of what you should be looking for when diamond shopping. However, there are also a few things that you will want to avoid.
Here are some of the most common diamond buying mistakes.
Not Doing Research
As mentioned, there are certain things that you should be looking for in a diamond. This is especially true if you have never bought a diamond before. While a good jeweler will explain various factors of diamonds to you, it’s still a big mistake to walk in without knowing anything about the precious stones.
Another area where you need to do research is in the jewelers themselves. Do not assume that every jewelry store is created equal. They are not.
Rushing
Buying a diamond, especially a diamond engagement ring, isn’t a quick process. There are many, many different factors to consider and doing so takes time. First of all, you’ll want to make sure that you choose a good jeweler. Not all jewelry stores offer the same pieces, not all provide the same level of quality and not all will help you choose the right diamond. That’s why it’s important to take your time and find one that’s right for you.
It’s also important to take the time to understand what you are looking for in your jewelry as well as what she would like. Which brings us to our next point:
Not Knowing What She Likes
If you’re buying a diamond for someone else, it’s important to know what they are looking for in their jewelry. Some people like more understated styles while others appreciate glitz and glam. There are many people who want traditional-style jewelry, but your girlfriend may be looking for a more modern look. Getting her the style that she wants is a big deal and everyone is different.

Not Having a Budget
When you’re buying jewelry, it’s important to have a budget. Now, this budget may change once you do some more research or see several styles of jewelry, but having a budget (or at least a budget range or upper limit in mind) will help you focus your search.

Not Obtaining a GIA Certification
The Geological Institute of America is often considered the benchmark for diamond grading. It is one of the world’s most respected institutes dedicated to study and education in gemology and the jewelry arts. The GIA’s certification process is industry standard for reputable dealers, so make sure your diamond is accompanied by a GIA certificate.
